Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
2024
Assemble RA curated the 2024 Architecture Rooms at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition. Responding to head coordinator Ann Christopher’s theme ‘Making Space’, Assemble encouraged submissions around the idea of ‘Space for Making’ – inviting pieces that focus and reflect on making as a process, such as: unfinished works, material samples, industrial prototypes, manufacturing spaces, industrial spaces, assembly spaces and buildings which provide studio spaces.
Assemble welcomed a range of disciplines, including: architects, artists, designers, musicians, manufacturers, craftspeople, material suppliers and community organisations; celebrating the many that make up our built environment.
The Central Hall and Gallery 6 were approached as distinct stage sets for the show. Gallery 6 referenced back of house storage spaces; utilising off-the-shelf metal racking systems to display large models and prototypes.
Central Hall used the room’s geometry to create mini workstations and shelves of a more domestic scale, enabling it to feel like a maker’s studio. The Building Crafts College in London lent working furniture which has been used to display works.
Assemble approached JA Projects to reuse two elements from the previous Royal Academy exhibition, Entangled Pasts – the mirrors and metal plinth add to the metallic reflective language of Gallery 6. In the Central Hall, swatches of paint from the other Academicians' rooms were applied by Assemble members around the space to connect the studio back to the rest of the show and to further emphasise the feeling of a messy, unfinished, working studio process.
Space for Making is a celebration of the messiness and exploration these places of production entail, while embracing failure and making room for the unconventional and enterprising ways we find to continue making together.
