De Beauvoir House is part of a Georgian Terrace within the Regent's Canal Conservation Area in Hackney. Assemble was commissioned to design a mansard extension, a full internal refurbishment, and a new garden shed.

At ground level, the kitchen and dining space is organised by a series of bespoke loose furniture pieces, delivered in collaboration with Assemble Workspace tenants Will Floyd Mclean and Studio Manolo.

A new Douglas Fir staircase connects the three refurbished floors and the new mansard.

The mansard accommodates a dedicated space for Japanese tea ceremony, featuring a tatami mat arrangement and an irori, as well as an external terrace.

The project employs a limited material palette of Douglas fir and brushed stainless steel, which acts as a consistent motif to unify the various spaces of the house.

Elements of the Georgian terrace, such as timber floorboards, window shutters, and sash windows, were inherited, repaired, and re-instated. The project sought to balance the contrast between these original and new characteristics.
