Totteridge Academy Quad

2019

Assemble worked with the Totteridge Academy and its students to design a new structure and garden at the school.

Totteridge Academy is a secondary school based near the village of Totteridge in Barnet, North London. Assemble were invited by the Academy to collaborate with a group of students in order to design a simple structure that would answer their brief - provision for a quieter space within a school that is already well equipped with sports facilities and outdoor spaces for more energetic activity.

We worked with the students and the engineers Structure Workshop to design a lightweight steel structure that covers a long blockwork bench. This colonnade surrounds a small garden filled with raised beds and centred around two multi-stem Juneberry trees.

Assemble are currently working with Totteridge Academy and Grow on a city farm next door to the school which builds on the relationships we have developed with the students, staff and landscape in Barnet. This new project will build on the opportunities to engage with growing and planting begun in this project in order to make a city farm that develops over time into a new local resource for the school and the local area.
